Spend a day at Portmeirion village and gardens, one of Wales' premier tourist attractions with over 200,000 visitors every year.
Built over 50 years from 1925-76, Portmeirion was designed and built as an 'ideal village' under the watchful eye of Welsh architect Clough Williams-Ellis. With a rumoured architectural nod to the Italian town of Portofino and the villages and towns of the Mediterranean, Clough's dream was to show how a naturally beautiful location could be developed and enhanced through sympathetic development. The steep cliffs overlooking the wide sandy estuary of the Dwyryd, woods, streams and old buildings and ruins provided a perfect spot.
The more eagle-eyed of our Greenliners will recognise Portmeirion as the setting for the cult classic 1960s show 'The Prisoner', starring Patrick McGoohan as Number Six. The village has also appeared in the final episodes of two other classic TV shows, 'Citizen Smith' starring Robert Lindsay and 'Cold Feet'. With so much to see and do, Portmeirion is a idyllic setting for a trip to the NW Welsh coast.
