Visit the historic National Trust-run Chirk Castle - a favourite of Greenliners - and standout example of medieval Welsh Marcher castles.
Started in the late 13th Century, Chirk Castle is a stunning example of the Marcher castles built to maintain Medieval English rule over the Welsh Borders. Passed through several of the most notorious noble families in medieval England, the house was last acquired by privateer and sugar trader Thomas Myddelton in 1595. His descendents remain in residence to this day; the last still living in a Marcher castle.
Over 700 years of history come to life through the lavish interiors and furnishings of the 17th Century Long Gallery, three 18th Century State Rooms, unique servant's hall and Chapel music room found inside the Castle.
Chirk's award-winning gardens cover 5.5 acres of manicured lawns, clipped yews, herbaceous borders and a wooded pleasure ground, whilst the terrace provides stunning views over the Cheshire and Salop plains. The estate also contains 480 acres of working parkland wiithin an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Site of Scientific Interest as well as a beautifully preserved section of Offa's Dyke.
