Spend a day in the beautiful Herefordshire countryside, visiting the delightful small town of Hay-on-Wye before heading of the the historic Cathedral city of Hereford.
Situated on the southern side of the River Wye at the northernmost point of the Brecon Beacons, Hay-on-Wye is one of the gems of the 'Marches'. Known throughout the world as 'the Town of Books', the town developed around the Norman castle built by the infamously treacherous lord, William de Breos. The castle has been the victim of several uprisings and captures by characters such as Welsh Prince Llewlyn ap Ioweth, Baron Simon de Montfort and King Edward II.
Modern Hay is renowned for its bookshops and the world famous Book Festival every spring. Along with the superb independent cafes and shops, make time to take in some of the best scenery that the borders have to offer!
Following our stint in Hay, we head back via the historic Cathedral city of Hereford. The Cathedral is home to the famous Mappa Mundi, the largest surviving and elaborately illustrated 14th Century map that shows the history, geography and destiny of humanity as understood in medieval Christendom. Hereford also boasts some stunning architecture, housing independent shops, cafes, restaurants and attractions. A perfect end to our day in the scenic surrounds of Herefordshire.
