Abergavenny

1 Days from just £27.00

Join us for a day just over the Welsh border to the market town of Abergavenny. Known as the 'Food Capital of Wales', Abergavenny is nestled in amongst the hills and mountains of the Black Mountains and wider Brecon Beacons National Park and offers stunning views of the local countryside. For the more active, there's plenty of great walks to experience the Welsh landscape and sights in all their glory.

The town itself is built on the site of a former Roman fort and still offers the remains of Norman Abergavenny Castle, whose grounds contain the town's museum. Bearing more than a passing architectural resemblance, the Westminster Abbey of Wales', the Grade I Benedictine Priory Church of St. Mary was built during the reign of William I and contains the world famous wooden Jesse effigy and other medieval monuments. The adjacent Tithe Barn also houses the Abergavenny Millennium Tapestry.

Like most medieval market towns, Abergavenny has a world of back and side streets full of wonderful independent shops to explore. It also lives up to its culinary nickname; with a host of award-winning restaurants and cafes to visit when you need to get off your feet, grab a bite to eat and take a minute to relax. We'll be visiting on market day - a tradition in the town for 800 years - which is held in the wonderful Market Hall and is definitely worth a look around.
