Grantham or Belton Estate

1 Days from just £32.00

Enjoy a charming day out in beautiful Lincolnshire as we offer Greenliners to chance to visit the historic market town of Grantham or the breathtaking Belton Estate, one of the finest treasures of the National Trust.

An attractive and industrial market town sitting on the Lincolnshire-Nottinghamshire border, Grantham is home to some of the country's most picturesque historic houses - including Belton Estate and Belvoir Castle - as well as being the home town of some of the most consequential figures in English history - William Cecil, Isaac Newton, revolutionary writer Thomas Paine and Margaret Thatcher.

Beginning life as a small Saxon village and noted in the Dommsday Book, Grantham's medieval heart reflects its successes in the wool and leather trade. St. Wulfram's Church offers what has been described 'the finest steeple in England' and the 13th century Angel and Royal on the High Street is one of the oldest coaching inns in the country and has hosted no fewer than seven Kings and Queens in its lifetime. Maybe most importantly, the town is also renowned for its gingerbread biscuits - well worth checking out when you fancy a little break.

Belton Estate is one of the jewels of the area. An exceptional example of Restoration architecture, Belton holds a world-renowned library and collections of art, silver and ceramics. The house sits in stunning formal Dutch and Italian gardens with a cast-iron conservatory and fountain. Head outside to the sundial or take a stroll along the Statue Walk through the Pleasure Grounds to get some of the most breathtaking views over the 1300 acres of parkland and are well worth exploring the grounds of the estate for.

For those who enjoy their modern history, Belton offers a fascinating insight into the Home Front in both World Wars. Donated for using as a military training facility from the Second Boer War, Belton operated in turn as a military hospital for wounded soldiers coming back from the trenches and a German POW camp.
